The Coronation Mass was Mozart’s first composition after his appointment as Court Organist to the Archbishop in Salzburg, and was first performed as part of the Easter liturgy of Salzburg Cathedral. It is most well known for its performance at the Imperial Coronation in Prague in 1792 (nine months after Mozart’s death), and this is why the title Coronation Mass was to become the name by which it is known. This CD also has performances of further liturgical works by Mozart.
Balance between soloists, choir and orchestra is good, and detail is not lost in the large acoustic of St John’s Chapel. The solo singers are all excellent, and have clearly come through the English ‘school’ of cathedral singing and opera studies, spending the majority of their careers ...
