Historically, the opus 3 concerti grossi were originally published by London printer John Walsh in 1734 without Handel’s knowledge and even mistakenly included a suite by Geminani! This, along with other errors, were later corrected in the second edition to create some of Handel’s most recognisable, and now perhaps most recorded, concerti grossi. In this rendition, the Kammerorchester Basel made the recording standing-up which seems to translate into a playful fluency of musical expression that weaves a fresh and distinctive vibrancy through the fabric of these works.
A variety of pleasing timbres emerge throughout and, combined with exquisite string playing, with tastefully applied vibrato, this interpretation works brilliantly on all levels. Particular highlights include ...
