This is a superb recording of the solo viola da gamba and continuo music by Marin Marais. This is by no means the first recording of these pieces, but certainly one that offers a fresh and exciting interpretation of these beautiful pieces. The CD opens with a solo theorbo prelude by Robert de Visèe, which, although well played, is slightly spoilt by the audible breathing of the player. Next, enters the beautiful, elegant and apparently effortless playing of Ruiz. Her musical direction is always crystal clear, and the dynamics are naturally varied to reflect the line of the music. Lastly, the harpsichord joins in – a beautiful opening to this CD.
For my taste, the inégal is sometimes a little on the heavy side, as in the track 2 Muzette, but this is of course merely personal taste, and does not take away from Ruiz’s effortless ...
